Objective To understand second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure and its influencing factors among middle school students in urban area of Guangzhou,so as to provide a scientific basis for effective intervention strategies.Methods A random sample of 3 575 middle school students from 7 schools was selected by using multi-stage stratified cluster sampling,and a questionnaire investigation was carried out.Results The overall prevalence of SHS exposure was 59.7%,and the prevalence in public places,homes and schools was 49.5%,34.5% and 10.7%,respectively.Multiple factors Logistic regression analysis showed that the SHS exposure in homes was associated with father smoking,good friend smoking,classmate smoking and home smoking bans.The SHS exposure in schools was associated with gender,classmate smoking,teacher smoking and good friend smoking.The SHS exposure in public places was associated with gender,pocket money,father smoking,good friend smoking and classmate smoking (P<0.05).Conclusion Public places and homes are the key places of second-hand smoke exposure among middle school students in Guangzhou,smoking from the surrounding population is the risk factor of SHS exposure.Reducing second-hand smoke exposure might benefit from home smoking cessation support.
